Essiac Extra Gold is the Classic 4-herb Essiac formula, Sheep sorrel content 50% roots, with Goldenseal. Although the ingredient originally used in the Native American formula from which Essiac was developed was most likely Goldthread (Coptis trifolia), there is evidence that Canadian Nurse Rene Caisse used Goldenseal when unable to source wild-harvested Goldthread to make the tea. Goldthread's tiny yellow roots remain a commercially non-viable source for the berberine which is also contained in Goldenseal. Earlier in her Essiac research, Mali Klein listed only Goldthread in the formula for this variation. She dubbed it Essiac Gold. However, when The Essiac Essentials Handbook was published in 2016, Goldenseal was added as an optional ingredient in the Essiac Gold recipe. We have always used Goldenseal as the best sustainable alternative to Goldthread in our Essiac Gold. We are pleased to offer Essiac Extra Gold, with a higher percentage of Sheep sorrel roots than available anywhere else unless you grow your own (which we recommend)!
